Q: What is Lead Poisoning?

Ans: Lead is a natural mineral that has been used in many products.lead is harmful to the human body.Small amounts of lead can buid up in the body and cause life long learning and behaviour problems. Buid up of lead in the body is reffered to as Lead poisoning.

Q: What are the common source of lead?

Ans: The important source of lead are automobile exhaust, industrial processes such as smelting of lead, recycling of lead batteries, manufacturing of lead based paints, herbal medicine, ceramic industries, childrens toys, metal jwellery, imported food can, cosmetics etc.

Q: Who should worry about lead poisoning?

Ans: Children under 10 years and fetuses are more exposed to lead poisoning, people who working in lead based industry, pregnant women who exposed to lead anyhow & it will transfer to her child too.

NOTE: Adults do not absorbed lead as easily as children only those who exposed to lead at work are higher risk of lead poisoning.

Q: What are the symptoms and hazards of lead poisoning?

Ans: A lead poisoned child may seem healthy or have following signs:

  • Learning and behaviour changes.
  • Tiredness.
  • Headaches
  • Hearing problems.
  • Weight loss.
  • Hyperactivity.
  • Irritability.
Hazard:
  • Can harm child nervous system & mental retardation(low IQ) level.
  • Can damage reproductory system.
  • Damage kidney and major organs.
  • Cause anemia.
  • Very high exposure can lead to seizures or death.

Q: How do i know if i am lead poisoned?

Ans: There is no particular symptoms.The only way to know if you /your child has lead poisoning is to get Blood test for lead.

Q: Can lead poisoning be treated?

Ans: yes , lead poisoning can be prevented while taking some precaution. The most common way to treat lead poisoning in children is to find the lead source and remove it from their environment. Few people may have high levels of lead in their blood that they require a medicine called chelating agent.

Q. What is the permissible level of lead?

Ans: The permissible limit of lead as suggested by physician is 10ug/dl in blood samples of children below 10 years.
